Today in [sound]: Sounds like Fall

Sounds like Fall!

Although the temperature isn’t supposed to drop until tomorrow, I proclaim that Fall is here simply because I stepped on too extremely crunchy leaves on my way home tonight. And in case you’re wondering, yes I did step out of my way to crunch them. Those two little leaves made my day. (note: this photo was taken last fall in DC. Can’t wait for the leaves to turn this year!)

City Sunset

I love the awesome colors as the sun sets over the city. This was taken from the 7th Street overpass in SW facing towards the river. We have to enjoy these while they last. Soon it will already be dark by the time most of us emerge from the metro after work.

Festival Season!

Miss. Frizzle on the Mall

This weekend was jam-packed with festivals in DC. From the National Book Festival on the Mall to Barracks’ Row Fall Festival along 8th street in SE, there was lots to do this weekend in the city.

I focused my festival-going efforts on my new favorite spot in Barracks Row. It was great to see so many new artists and vendors out to break up the usual line-up found at nearby Eastern Market.

One highlight of the Fall Festival was a little adventure we were enticed to take down an alley to a great little studio nestled behind Matchbox restaurant. The Fridge provides an awesome exhibition space for artists and seeks to promote expression through art in the community. This weekend’s exhibit by local artist, Ben Tolman was pretty tight and served as a great way to introduce festival-goers to the space.

I loved Ben's use of "junk" paper as the canvas for his artwork

After this wonderful weekend of festival-ing (yes, that’s a word) I’ve set the bar high for the coming weekends this Fall. I don’t think I need to worry about running out of things to do though. That’s why I love this city!

If Nutella had a home

Over the past few months I’ve been spending a lot of time at a splendid little spot on Capitol Hill….I’m debating if I want to tell you what it’s called for fear of losing my favorite cooshy red chair in the window when you all swarm over there.  Because trust me, once you start going you won’t stop.

I started out ordering a simple iced coffee whenever I visited (which is the BEST ice coffee you will ever have). Then quickly added a chocolate chip cookie to my order until recently when I discovered their scrumptious Nutella Scone.  Mmmmmmm…..I’m salivating just writing about it. It’s not dense like your usual StaleBux muffin. It’s light and fluffy inside like…like….like it should be! With swirls of Nutella adding just the right amount of sweetness it is truly a home run.

Yum in a scone

With quite a few Nutella-centric items on the menu there is certainly something to delight your taste buds.  And if creamy hazlenut spread isn’t your cup of tea then there’s plenty more to indulge in (including a cup of tea) on their menu of fresh salads, warps, paninis and baked goods.

Oh! And if you’re planning to utilize their free Wi-Fi to get some work done and think you’ll need to bring your headphones to get your dose of work-worthy music, then think again! Their unique assortment of revolving staff-selected Pandora stations is excellent. Plus, losing the ear buds every once in a while can do a body good!

They call me Mellow Yellow

Last weekend my roommate and I ventured down to the waterfront in Old Town Alexandria. It was a beautiful afternoon and if you’ve ever visited the boardwalk down there you’ve probably noticed the Cherry Blossom ferry boat pictured above.

The very next day I went for a walk around Capitol Hill and spotted this cheery row house painted a lovely shade of buttercup.
